The Real Thing: Why authenticity in classical music is key

What is it about classical music performances and authenticity? Why are we in awe at a machine-like perfect musician, dressed like a rock star, playing at supersonic speed,  and at the same time also transcend during the performance of an old man in tails on a dim stage? One encompasses the entire performative concept, while the other puts all energy into sound?

Whatever it might be:  Both have equal merit, both are authentic.

When a musician becomes the expert of delivering their inner selves, audiences feel it.
